There’s just no downtime when you’ve decided to purchase Roy Vogt’s Team Me Bass Guitar. The lessons are quite easy to follow. Roy breaks down technqiues, be it beginner or advanced, to the point of it’s actually simple to digest. He keeps a constant pace to make sure you are not left behind. Tips and instructions are clearly presented to ensure that you don’t have to press pause. Actually you will rarely press pause.

Aside from the lessons Roy offers, the entire turorial provides you with visual enticing videography that makes sure your eyes and ears are glued. The ambiance of the set is quite casual. Nothing fancy, and not too simple. You’ll also feel what it feels like to play with a professional band. It may be part of the exercise, but as soon as the riffs are a part of your system, you’ll feel like a part of a professional band.

You don’t have to be intimidated by your “band members” during the entire time. Each play-along, depending on which stage you are, the songs and compositions you play to are arranged so that you are not outshined. This collective of excellent musicians don’t show off their skills in their instruments. This is your show. They make sure they support your skills. Soon enough, you’d be surprised that you’re actually jamming to the more complex types of songs and arrangements.

However, the band, the place, the trainer himself are not the only ones that will keep your attention to the entire session.

At the bottom-right part of the screen is a moonface character, fondly nicknamed: “Ralph”. Think of him as the comic relief. Every once in a while, or after a few lines from whoever just spoke, he’d release some witty or humorous remarks. He makes fun of what was just said, or who just said things. He grumbles and complains, he shoots off, although most of the time inaccurately funny, trivias. At a certain point, you’re eyes are going to be more attuned to Ralph rather than on the lesson. But, not enough to lose your track.

Strangely enough, you’ll learn a lot from Ralph just as you’ll learn plenty from Roy.

Don’t get too entertained by Ralph for in the left side of the screen, various tips and useful tools will pop-up. From a metronome to build your sense of beat, to small notes that you provides you with tips. They correspond to the lessons that you are in.

Your eyes might be a little bit too busy, now. From the main screen, to Ralph’s section, to the tips on the left. Your eyes will have something easy to rest on.

She comes in the form of your hostess for the training session, Ashley Lollis. Not only is she beautiful, she also provides you a brief synopsis and a gentle introduction to each lesson. She’s an attention grabber. Not just because of her looks and her amazing sense of fashion, but also in her hosting skills. You can think of her as the upperclass girl who introduces and guides you around the campus, and you are the freshman. She’s the perfect feminine figure for a studio full of male musicians.

Every persona you will encounter in the session makes sure that there is no dull moment in your pursuit of perfecting your bass playing. From Roy, to the band, to Ashley, to even the extras moving in the background.

Oh, yeah there’s also Ralph…

But, the teachings are not limited to the discs alone. And when you’re done with all 10, the lessons don’t just stop there.

The instructional comes with a .pdf file in the discs, just so that if you’re not watching you can still play along and review what has been taught.

To make sure that you are improving, your teacher, Roy also encourages you to send the videos of your progression. He will personally watch each video and offer you critique, feedback and even more tips to further advance your skills. And that’s personally coming from Roy.

So, there you have it. It’s an entire bass training session rolled into 10 DVD’s. By the time you’re done, you’ll be playing like a Pro, and maybe one of these days you’ll be playing with the Pro’s.

I was inspired to put up a Teach Me Bass Guitar review because I am very impressed with this course – course being a key word, not just “instructional DVD”

I have a degree in electric bass from Berklee College of Music, teach privately and at accredited schools. I know how expensive and hard it can be to get regular lessons, and to keep motivated.

I like that besides being a bass *and* musicianship course, it is also a visual / audio practice tool, set of play-along recordings and more. Typically, you buy a course and it suggests these tools to purchase separately, but Teach Me Bass Guitar has everything self contained in one very well presented package.

Not a Typical Bass DVD

Obviously this is more expensive than a typical bass DVD. However if you are serious (or want to get serious and really play), the fact that it is 16 hours worth of actual quality teaching, plus a real practice tool, make it a very good value comparatively.

Teach Me Bass Guitar runs for less than what you are likely to pay for less than 2 hours worth lessons with a teacher of Roy Vogt’s caliber – if you even have access to one. Sales pages often really exaggerates stats like that, but if you call some well known players and ask their lesson rate, you will find this to be accurate.

* I Believe You’ll Like Teach Me Bass Guitar If: *

You are looking for a complete, total beginner to quite advanced, A-Z bass guitar course

You are interested in music theory, reading music, and other skills

You are self motivated and can work on your own – however, you can take as long as you need thanks to it being DVD.

If you are a little more advanced and are worried this course may be too basic, I recommend checking out Teach Me Bass Guitar Review: videos from later lessons to see the level it deals on.

I do NOT recommend this course if:

You are mostly interested in slap bass / double thump / popping techniques (not that there is no slapping, but that isn’t what this one is “all about.”)

You do not want to learn any music theory / harmony, only the physical aspects of bass playing.

The Lowdown

The course spans 20 lessons contained in 10 DVDs. At a total of more than 16 hours viewing time, this is hands-down the most comprehensive bass instructional course I have come across to teach yourself bass guitar.

If you are a total newbie, I feel you will get a more thorough and valuable foundation than you will from many private teachers out there, because the reality of the situation is that not everyone has a local, affordable teacher on the level of Roy Vogt.

Also the luxury of watching the material over and over again is huge.

If you have some experience on the bass, do not worry about the course being too basic- it is very thorough and goes into some serious musical and technical territory. It is also quite likely to “fill in some gaps” or details that may have been overlooked.

Each DVD is really packed with material, no BS, no filler just to make this seem like a big course to charge you more. The video is shot in widescreen HD, and both the audio and video are top-notch. Check out this sample teach me bass guitar review video clip to give you an idea (this is quite early in the course):

Working Through Teach Me Bass Guitar

Each lesson starts off with an introduction by Ashley Lollis, who also finishes with a few encouraging bits of advice after each lesson, as well as a review of what you will need to have learned before proceeding.

Vogt starts off each lesson with a warm up exercise, and ends with a cool-down exercise afterwards. The lessons themselves cover anything and everything from the basics to the most advanced techniques used by some of the most accomplished players in the business. On the basic end of the spectrum, you will learn the workings of the bass, the notes on the fretboard, the proper way to move around the neck, different picking styles, sight reading music, time signatures and more. Lesson 1 also gets you started on playing an actual song.

Things proceed along at a fairly manageable pace over the next few lessons, which take you through playing scales and chords, rhythm playing, the different modes, and even more advanced techniques such as tapping, slap bass, and a lot more impressive bass techniques. Keep in mind though, that at no time does Teach Me Bass Guitar devolve into a collection of flashy tricks and pyrotechnic displays of playing ability. Instead, a firm focus is maintained on solid musical concepts and theory all throughout. Flash is really fun to watch, but Vogt is really all about getting YOU to be able to do what you want on the instrument in actual live playing situations.

As mentioned previously, the course proceeds quite manageably over the first few lessons, but things get a bit more intense around Lessons 7 to 8. From this point on, you get a chance to try out what you have learned thus far with a few of Vogt’s own students, and you even get to play with an actual (video) band. The good thing is that Vogt is just as focused on demonstrating key concepts and techniques during this part of the course as he was in the earlier sections, so you will never feel as if you are in over your head.

The “Bottom Line”

Teach Me Bass Guitar is a rare instructional material that covers the fundamentals of playing from the ground up, and takes it into advanced territory with the right foundations. This course really stands out in a sea of lackluster instructional materials put together to make a fast buck. For sheer quality, quantity, range, presentation, and actual, practical practice use, Teach Me Bass Guitar is a very good investment by my standards. It is not unusual for a great teacher to charge $70-$100 per lesson, which is a good reference point for just how much value you actually get for the comparatively low price of this course.

This Teach Me Bass Guitar review will now look at some of the extras and features in the course. There is a PDF document in DVD #5 of Teach Me Bass Guitar that is essentially an accompaniment book to the course, filled with notated exercises, notes, and other material to go along with or compliment the DVDs. Alternately, you may also get a printed and bound version of the guide for an extra $40. I like the fact that the option is there to print this yourself without driving the cost of the course up or “requiring” the purchase of the book.

Videos – Teach Me Bass Guitar Review

Also included are more than 100 music videos that allow you to play along backed up by top studio professional musicians. As stated earlier in the Teach Me Bass Guitar Review, this alone is a valuable investment that would normally be a separate cost, which makes me impressed at the amount they included. The songs are played at different tempos and with and without Roy Vogt playing along, so you can either learn at your own pace or jam with a full band when you are ready. We also have to mention that the songs cover a fairly wide range of styles and genres, so there should be a little something for everyone regardless of musical preferences. This really is quite significant.. play-along recordings are a great tool and usually a separate investment.

Check out this video to see how a line taught in an earlier lesson is put into practice with a live band. You will also see an example of the cool down exercise.

Teach Me Bass Guitar Review – Features

One of the most helpful features we will examine in this Teach Me Bass Guitar review is the “real time fretboard” that allows you to see exactly what notes Vogt is playing. This innovative feature gives you instant visual feedback on fretting patterns and note placements, and clearly shows you what Vogt is doing at all times.

Also included is another innovative feature called the “loop library”. This is a selection of exercises and songs within particular lessons that “loop” or play over and over when you select them. This makes it easy for you to hone in on specific parts without having to wear out the rewind button. This is definitely a helpful feature that all instructional materials would do well to adopt. Many Teach Me Bass Guitar Reviews online praise these video features for making life easier.

Finally, those who already know how to read traditional sheet music will appreciate the visual cues that show you exactly where you are in the piece.

Extras Included In Teach Me Bass Guitar

The DVD course also comes with a few extras that greatly add to the value of the course. Among these are supplemental sessions that cover fretless bass and 7-string bass techniques, setting up your bass for optimum comfort, tone and performance, and the use of effects in bass playing. While you may not have to go over this material until you are well-versed with the rest of the course, it is good to know that the additional material is there when you do need it.

Finally, you are also encouraged to send in a video performance of your playing after you have completed Teach Me Bass Guitar. In return, your performance will be graded and critiqued personally. This is also very unusual and impressive for a home course, especially that private lessons with someone of Vogt’s caliber could easily go for $100+ for an hour – making this one of the most valuable things covered in this Teach Me Bass Guitar review.

It is my hope that this along with part one of the Teach Me Bass Guitar Review will help you see the value in this course and know whether or not it is right for you.

Roy Vogt has had an extensive 40-year+ career that has touched on various aspects of performance, study, and instruction. Focusing primarily on the electric bass, Vogt has taught university level bass instruction for more than 30 years, and has in fact earned a master’s degree in electric bass performance from the University of Miami.

Having played with many important names in the music business in hundreds of concerts around the world, Roy Vogt’s credentials are excellent. I feel this is important, because great players do not always make great teachers.

Roy has a really relaxed vibe, as you can see from the Teach Me Bass Guitar video, but he is very clear and does not waste time. He knows his stuff, and gets it across. Some players talk in circles or just do what they do without being able to articulate it very clearly, which is absolutely not the case with Roy Vogt. He is definitely the right man for the job for a course like this.

Roy Vogt in Teach Me Bass Guitar

Roy Vogt is able to fully utilize his wide range of experience in Teach Me Bass Guitar, giving you real world examples of HOW to use the various things you will learn in the course. It is one thing to learn a bunch of techniques, but another to have someone both explain and demonstrate how to use these techniques in actual live performance situations.

One example is the Nashville number system that is taught in Teach Me Bass Guitar along with traditional chord changes. Despite years of training and familiarity with how chord symbols work, I was never exposed to the Nashville number system as I had not dealt much with that area or style of music. However, knowing it opens up even more doorways an opportunities to play with different people in different parts of the world – something Roy Vogt has taken full advantage of.

This guide will help you know what to look for in a teacher or instruction method for electric bass. Electric bass is a great instrument that can be incredibly fun to play. It is a critical part of almost any ensemble, in countless genres of music. Whether your dream is to tour and record, or just to play for your own enjoyment, finding the right bass guitar lessons and instruction for beginners can make the process much more pleasant. The greater your knowledge of the instrument, the the greater time you will have playing, as well as the amount you will work or perform. Whether you are into rock, metal, funk, or jazz, there are fundamentals in learning how to play bass that will serve you well regardless of genre. This guide will help you know what to look for in a teacher or instruction method.

Your Teacher – Bass Guitar Instruction Critical Point

Naturally, the actual instructor (or perhaps author) is an important factor. There are a number of qualifications to look for, some of which may require a very small amount of research. Are they hired to play professionally by a number of different artists? Remember that almost all bands need a bass player, and this means there are hundreds of people out there that “play bass in a band.” Many will call themselves professionals and offer to teach, without having much experience or solid foundation themselves. Look for someone who is or has been hired to play in a variety of situations, the higher the level (professional tours, recordings, etc.) generally the better, as it means they know what it takes to sound good in a variety of situations, and get to whatever level you would like to achieve.

It is important that your teacher or method of choice shows proper physical technique for playing the bass, not only for speed and sound, but for ergonomics. With poor posture or playing habits, it can be frighteningly easily to develop everything from basic soreness to real issues like carpel tunnel syndrome. Be sure to develop good habits from the start, even though it can be tempting to just dive in and play. Though everyone has a different body type and it is not always possible to “copy” someone else for good posture, a good teacher or course will cover the fundamental principles of sound technique.

Of course, you will also want your bass guitar instruction to cover the technique of developing dexterity and tone. While your particular bass, amplifier, strings and other gear naturally influence the sound, an incredible range of tone control comes from your fingers. A good teacher or course will cover the different types of attacking (finger style, slapping, thumb playing, playing closer to the bridge or neck, and so on,) muting, fretting, and all technical aspects of creating a variety of desired sounds from the same instrument.

Though speed is important, you will want someone that can teach how to play at any tempo with an even sound. Be certain that your teacher or course has a solid background in music theory and can show you at least the basics. There will be a wide range in interest among those of you reading this, from total theory-fascination to total lack of interest. I promise you that getting some of the fundamentals under your belt will be so useful and help your playing so much that you will be glad you studied it. Rather than having to memorize your favorite bass lines and songs note for note and discovering fingerings or positions, when you are able to see the “big picture” it will speed up your progress dramatically. Literally thousands of your favorite songs fit into musical formulas that you will be able to hear, recognize, and most importantly, already know how to play when you have a basic foundation of the scales and chords on which most songs are based.

Creating a groove is one of the most important, as well as most fun aspects of being a bass player. There is much more to this than simply playing “in time,” though that should be covered by your teacher as well. Groove is what makes the music feel great, and the bass plays a huge part in creating it. This has a lot to do with note lengths, how you attack them, and the overall attitude or energy in your playing. There is nothing better than making the band groove, and few qualities are more loved by your band mates as well as the audience. Listen to clips of players like Victor Wooten or Marcus Miller playing by themselves, and pay attention to how the beat feels. Be certain that your teacher can groove and explain the physical and mental aspects involved in creating one.

Speaking of groove, perhaps the best way to develop it is also the most fun, which is playing with drummers and rhythm sections that know how to groove hard. Besides being enjoyable, this will naturally adjust your own playing as you learn to listen and “lock in” with the time and groove being generated by the other players. After the time feel becomes part of you, you will be able to express it on the instrument by yourself. A good teacher or method will provide, or be able to help you find resources for this (there are many great records to play with, as well as specifically designed “play-along” tracks where the bass is able to be isolated or removed.)

Lastly, you will want a teacher or course that allows you to move at the pace that is appropriate for you, while still pushing you forward. Moving too advanced too quickly will just make you feel frustrated, whereas moving too slow or not having enough variation will make you feel bored.

We believe that Teach Me Bass Guitar is the first DVD home study course that fits all of these criteria. Check out the Teach Me Bass Guitar Review

I felt it would be valuable to include notes from other Teach Me Bass Guitar Reviews, because after all, my Teach Me Bass Guitar Review is ultimately one perspective.

You will notice a common thread in Teach Me Bass Guitar Reviews across the internet and in print: people are consistently saying it’s the most thorough and impressive Bass DVD course they have come across. So far, it really has set the standard and the Teach Me Bass Guitar Reviews reflect this.

“Just thought I’d drop you a line to let you know how I’m getting on with this awesome product. I have never enjoyed anything as much as I’m enjoying learning bass (with TMBG). You just don’t get this quality of tuition anywhere else that I’m aware of. To be able to sit in a room with someone of Roy’s talent and ability is incredible. The benefits of this are amazing. You can learn at your own pace, you can feel dumb and no one else knows, you can play the same lesson over and over and you only pay once. And it’s very easy to understand and being able to play along with a world-class band gives you the confidence to be able to go and look for people to jam with. I’m well pleased with the product and with my progress…and the price is another bonus! There is only one more thing you could add, an autographed poster-sized portrait of Ashley!”

Michael Toomey, Sydney, Australia

Roy Vogt’s Teach Me Bass Guitar is, without a doubt, the most thorough instructional course I’ve ever seen! Regardless of one’s level of accomplishment on the bass, this series of ten DVDs offers something for everyone – even those who have never picked up a bass before.

Roy’s presentation couldn’t be more clear, particularly with the use of multiple camera angles, helpful editing and Roy’s straightforward, easy to understand approach.

From Jon Liebman at http://www.forbassplayersonly.com/Reviews/TMBG.html

More Teach Me Bass Guitar Reviews:

“I’ve had nothing but good times with Teach Me Bass Guitar! WELL worth every penny! Thanks to Roy, I’m really learning. You folks have gone out of your way to please me! I show my program to everybody I meet who is interested in bass guitar and they all think it is killer! Thanks so much for a GREAT product!”

Jay Levell, Palmer, Alaska, U.S.A.

If you are brand new to the bass, you have come to the right place. You are going to start off with learning the basic parts of the bass and some finger exercises essential to developing the muscles you need to play.

If you have already been playing for a while, don’t think this is just a beginner bass dvd course. Far from it. Even if you already know your way around the neck, Roy is going to super charge your knowledge of the fretboard and bass playing in general.

Roy covers a very wide range of topics. From learning scales and arpeggios, to slapping and two handed tapping. You will also explore playing bass in different styles of music, from Jazz to Rock to Reggae.

From http://www.cyberfretbass.com/bass-lesson-reviews/teach-me-bass-guitar/index.php

Roy Vogt’s Teach Me Bass Guitar DVD series is surely getting a lot of reviews by those who have tried it out and those who haven’t alike. Like any other commodity out there on the market, it is bound to be loved and also disliked at the same time. A run through the Teach Me Bass Guitar reviews reveals that those who like it do so for various reasons – and so do the very few who have some disagreements. As you probably know by now, Teach Me Bass Guitar is an interactive instructional video course that comprises of 16 hours of step – by – step bass lessons. It also comes with a detailed instruction manual.

One blogger – with Teach Me Bass Guitar Reviews describes the course as inspirational. Contending that it is impressive, he argues that though it might be more expensive than a typical bass DVD, it is very good value for money – something echoed on this site. He also notes that the entire cost of the course is similar or less than a very small number of lessons with a professional player with an international performingn career.
Another reviewer working his way through the Teach Me Bass Guitar interactive video course has even started his own blog to share about his experience with it as well as to keep himself motivated. Ironically, the first response he gets on his blog is a pretty disheartening one. A responder poses this question to him, ‘Just wondering, why do you think we’d care?’ Obviously, the latter doesn’t think much about Vogt’s DVD, but overall responses were positive with other Teach Me Bass Guitar reviews.

John Liebman – another blogger – calls Teach Me Bass Guitar ‘the most thorough instructional course I’ve ever seen.’ According to him, the series of DVDs offers something for everyone – regardless of their level of accomplishment on the bass – even those who’ve never picked up a bass guitar before. This is especially so – he continues – because it starts with the very basic concepts and only gets complex gradually.

CyberfretBass.com’s Shawn Bradshaw’s contribution to Teach Me Bass Guitar reviews highlights that Vogt’s DVD series is not perfect because no course can really be 100% comprehensive. He stresses that Vogt holds a Masters degree in electronic bass and has decades of professional playing experience. According to him, all this information and experience cannot be bequeathed to someone in just 16 hours! He however concludes that Roy’s guidance can surely make the practice fun and faster and that it is still a very worthwhile course.

James Howard, in California, lauds Teach Me Bass Guitar’s customer service. He happens to have bought a defective disc, which has been replaced even before he has had the time to return the defective one! ‘Not only is your product the best teaching tool,’ he says, ‘I will continue to sing your praises to everyone I know.’ He concludes by thanking Vogt’s team.

According to Mike Hopper in Madison, USA, Teach Me Bass Guitar looks very professional. He says that ‘it is well thought out and Roy is an excellent teacher.’ He ends his contribution to the Teach Me Bass Guitar reviews by stating: ‘He [Roy] makes the advanced stuff easy to understand.’

Teach Me Bass Guitar reviews have predominantly been positive. This is certainly a big plus for Roy Vogt and his team, who are no strangers to success. With such reviews continuing to pour in, they are certainly bound to keep smiling all the way to the bank!
Hopefully you found these Teach Me Bass Guitar Reviews useful.
